Originally, I cast Joe [Sernio] to play the role of a detective’s partner, a small role with a couple pages of dialogue. It wasn’t until the first read through that I realized that this guy needs more screen time. Today, a couple of drafts later, Joe’s character, “Detective Cavallo” has dramatically expanded into a really interesting role. Joe has an amazing on screen presence and vocally, he makes my audio kit worth every penny. He is by far one of the most dedicated actors I have ever worked with. From the detailed, pencil written notes all over his script to his asking of questions to better understand his character, his method is one to be appreciated by any director. I’m all for casting new talent and exploring my options, but when you work with a guy like Joe, whose range is so vast – capable of setting any mood with simply facial expressions, it’s a wonder why you got guys like Depp & Burton working together over and over again. Joe has been beneficial to this film in more ways than one and it is for this reason I’ll sure as hell be collaborating with him again, soon.
