His last days in Pine Valley
Currents Own Web Designer Joe Sernio Says Goodbye to All My
Children.
by Lori Draz
When you called actor Joe Sernio a Pine-y, it didn’t mean he
came form Glouster County. For Sernio, it meant the
time he spent in Pine Valley at as cast member on ABC’s
popular Daytime Drama, “All My Children”
Actor Joe Sernio is looking for a new town to call home, as
ABC has decided to relocate the cast of crew of Pine Valley
and “All My Children” from New York City to California.
Sernio
made nearly 2 dozens appearances as an orderly in the Pine
Valley Hospital on the popular daytime drama. Sernio and
several other New York actors will not be making the trip to
their new location in Los Angeles. He is saddened to
see the show move, especially since it meant so much to the
extended family of technicians and support personnel, but
says his time on the show was, “the best experience I’ve
ever had.” Sernio said in an earlier interview with
Soap Central, “They were wonderful to work with, everyone
was very willing to help you out and share their knowledge.”
Sernio started on the show in 2008. He auditioned for a role
in which he did not get, then later read for another role,
which become his recurring role as a Pine Valley Orderly.
The handsome young actor has appeared on Love Monkey,
Haunting Evidence, and is well known around the Jersey Shore
for his award winning film “The Roadhouse”, which one the
People’s Choice award at last year’s Garden State Film
Festival. Sernio was also nominated for The Robert
Pastorelli Rising Star Award, at that same festival. In 2006
Sernio appeared on his first Soap Opera,” As
The World Turns” which was recently canceled by CBS. He
played a college student on the show before leaving to film
Haunting Evidence. Nick Pavano of Lightning Films, cast him
in the lead of “The Roadhouse”, which also won for best
Original song in a feature film for “This Ocean Drive” by
Chris Leone of Wicker Hollow.
What are your plans now that you will not be working in Pine
Valley?
“I have come a long way and everyday is a new experience. I
will try to stay in the soaps and other shows. “All My
Children” was a show I wanted to get on for quite some time.
I kept at it, calling, sending press kits, till it happened.
I’ll use that same dedication to open new doors. As
they say, the show must go on, right?”
What
was the experience like working on the Soap?
Soap Central asked me the same thing a few weeks ago and I
laugh, because I can’t even explain it. Acting is something
I live for and something I want to do for the rest of my
life, so being on set, with all those pros, was such a rush.
I wasn’t Ryan, or Zack, or Aiden turner. I was just a plain
old orderly floating around the hospital and it was still
amazing. I did more interviews now that the show is leaving,
than I did in the last 9 years of my acting career.
Was it hard memorizing your lines?
Out of 20 episodes almost half were U5’s (Lines) so the ones
that were not that bad at all. I had a few lines in the
episode where I was Kendal’s nurse right when she went to
have her heart transplant. I got to hang with Zack (Thorsten
Kaye) I was a little worried I was going to mess up but
wound up doing it pretty well.
Does anyone ever recognize you from the show?
Once I was leaving set in my scrubs and I walked out into
the hallway where there was a line for The View (They film
in the same studio right across the hall as “All My
Children”) as I walked out 2 women grabbed me and asked for
a picture… it was great. Some fans wait outside the studio,
but never really got stopped.
What’s your take on all of these shows going off the air?
It really is a shame. Working on soaps for young actors is
amazing. It’s the greatest training you will get. Just like
any other sets, it’s all training. You learn more and more
every time everyday. I guess it really is the end of the
soap era, which stinks cause I’m just getting into it.
What’s
next for you? Will you be going to LA?
I let this secret out a few weeks ago. I’m not moving to LA
but I will be going for a few days just to get my feet wet.
I know a few days is probably nothing but I have some
contacts out there that I am going to connect with and shoot
for a few things. I’ll also be going out with a few people
from Freedom Land Films to show the trailer for My Brothers
Keeper which gave me the opportunity to work with award
winning director Frank Calo. I’m working on a series
called, Compulsive and some other side projects. I’m going
to concentrate on these projects and regroup get new head
shots, post cards, and start sending out. I had a pretty
cool steady gig and side projects going on so I kind of
stopped which is bad but I’ll get on track again.
